The Yamaha P-45 has been my go-to recommendation for years, but the most common email I get from readers isn't about the action or the sound. It's about the headphone jack. Either it's stopped working entirely, or it's producing sound in only one ear, or there's a constant hiss that makes practice unbearable.

The good news is that most of the time, this is a fixable problem that costs you nothing but twenty minutes.
The bad news is that sometimes it's a symptom of a deeper issue.

The P-45's headphone jack is the same design Yamaha has used for a decade: a single 1/4-inch TRS jack mounted on the back edge of the chassis, soldered to the main board. The Roland FP-10 (around $500) uses the same layout, and it has the same failure mode: the jack is a weak point because it's a mechanical part on a circuit board that gets flexed every time you plug and unplug a cable.
The Kawai ES120 (around $900) is different. It uses a separate headphone amp board connected by a ribbon cable, which means if the jack fails, you can replace the board without touching the main logic board. That's a meaningful repair difference, but it also means the ES120 costs twice as much as the P-45. For the price difference, you can buy a new P-45 and a spare.
The RockJam 61-key bundle doesn't even have a proper headphone jack. It has a 1/8-inch output that's shared with the line-out, and the included headphones are cheap enough that they're often the failure point. One buyer, writing in a review, said the headphones "arrived broken" and the keyboard itself "worked well for six months" before dying completely. That's a different class of problem.
Design
The headphone jack on the P-45 is located on the left side of the rear panel, next to the sustain pedal input and the USB-to-host port. It's a recessed 1/4-inch jack, which is good because it protects the plug from being knocked sideways.
The problem is that the jack is mounted flush with the back panel, so there's no strain relief. Every time you move the piano, the cable bends at the plug.
Over months of use, that flexing works the solder joint loose.
I've seen this exact failure on two of my students' P-45s. One was a 14-year-old who used the same pair of headphones every day, plugging and unplugging them multiple times per session. The other was a family that kept the piano in a corner and let the headphone cable dangle behind the stand. The fix for the intermittent connection is straightforward. Unplug everything, spray a small amount of DeoxIT into the jack, and plug and unplug the headphone plug a dozen times to work the cleaner into the contacts. Performance
The audio quality through the P-45's headphone jack is fine. It drives standard 32-ohm headphones to a reasonable volume, and the built-in amp is clean enough for practice. It's not a high-end headphone amp, and you won't get the detail you'd hear on a $500 dedicated amp, but that's not the point. The point is that you can practice at midnight without waking anyone.
What I test for is consistency. I plug in a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones and play the same Bach prelude, the same Chopin nocturne, the same blues improvisation. The P-45 handles all three cleanly.
There's no hiss at low volume, no hum when you touch the plug, and the stereo imaging is correct. The sustain pedal and the keys work as expected.
The only issue is the mechanical durability of the jack itself.
The single-ear problem is the most common complaint. A buyer named Michael, a 30-year pianist, noted that the P-45's action is "incredibly solid," but owners who use headphones daily report that the jack becomes unreliable after a year or two.
The cause is almost always the cable, not the piano. The 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch adapter that comes with most headphones is cheap, and the 1/4-inch plug is often a hollow shell that doesn't make solid contact.
Replace that adapter with a solid metal one, and the problem usually disappears.
If you're getting no sound at all, check the piano's internal speaker setting. The P-45 has a "Speakers Off" button on the front panel. If that's engaged, the speakers are silent, and you might think the headphone jack is broken when it's actually the speakers that are muted. That's a common false alarm, and I've had two students bring me their "broken" pianos that were perfectly fine.
Durability
This is where the P-45's headphone jack gets problematic. The jack is soldered to the main board, and the solder joint is small. After about four years of daily use, the joint can crack, which causes intermittent sound or complete failure.
A buyer named Weston N. documented exactly this timeline: "at about the four-year mark, the action does noticeably degrade, the keys get a little mushy and develop a clicking sound." The headphone jack can fail on the same schedule.
The repair is not for beginners. You have to open the chassis, desolder the old jack, and solder in a new one. It's a 30-minute job if you know what you're doing, but it's also easy to damage the board if you're not careful. The replacement jack costs about $5. The soldering iron and the courage to open up a $450 piano are the real costs.
My recommendation for most people is simpler: if the jack fails and you're not comfortable with a soldering iron, buy a USB audio interface. The P-45 has a USB-to-host port that carries MIDI, not audio, so that's not a direct solution.
But you can buy a cheap external headphone amp with a 1/4-inch input for $30, plug the piano's line-out into it, and use headphones from there.
The P-45 doesn't have a dedicated line-out, but the headphone jack outputs at line level, so you can run it into the amp's input and use the amp's headphone jack instead.
It's a workaround, but it works.
Value
Here's the cost-per-day math. A P-45 costs around $450. If it lasts four years before the action degrades and the headphone jack gets flaky, that's $112 per year, or about 31 cents per day of practice. That's cheap for a real instrument with a weighted action. Even if you have to buy a $30 external headphone amp to work around the jack, you're still under $500 total.
The alternative is the RockJam 61-key bundle at around $100. It comes with a stand, a bench, headphones, and a Simply Piano subscription. But the failure timeline is brutal. One owner reported it "worked well for six months" and then turned off permanently, and the manufacturer said they hold no US stock and couldn't help.
That's $100 for six months of practice, or 55 cents per day, and you end up with a paperweight. Even if the P-45's jack fails at year four, the instrument itself still works through the speakers.
The RockJam doesn't even make it that far.
Should you buy it?
If you're a beginner or buying for a 10-year-old who's serious about practicing, buy the P-45 and don't worry about the headphone jack. It will work for years, and if it fails, the workaround is cheap and simple.
If you're buying for a 6-year-old who might not stick with it, the RockJam bundle is acceptable, but understand that it's a toy, not an instrument, and it might not survive a year of daily use.
For anyone who's serious, the P-45 is still the best budget piano on the market, and the headphone jack issue is a minor inconvenience, not a dealbreaker.
The best insurance is to buy a good pair of headphones with a detachable cable and a solid metal 1/4-inch adapter. That alone prevents most of the problems I see. And if the jack does fail, don't panic. It's a mechanical part on a circuit board, and it can be fixed or worked around for less than the price of a month of lessons.
I'm currently testing the Roland FP-10 and the Kawai ES120 to see how their headphone jacks hold up under the same daily abuse, and I'll update this piece when I have more data.
